If You Want Your Google Ads to Be Successful, Then DON’T Start with Keyword Research.
Keywords are an important part of Google Ads, but it should come after you set the strategic foundation. You can take your Google (and search engine) ads to the next level by starting with these steps:
1. Understand what matters most to the business
- Are there products or services that are top priority for growth?
- Are there new products you need to get in front of customers?
- Where do you want to drive the most conversions?
2. Understand your customers pain points
- In lots of our free guides and blog posts, we’ve called out the importance of knowing your ICP (Ideal Customer Profile), so who is your customer for that product or service?
- What problems are these users trying to solve?
- Gather more insights from reviews you’ve received, GA4/Analytics data, content that performs well, etc.
3. Highlight your product’s or service’s strengths
- What makes your product stand out?
- What pain points does it solve better than the competition?
4. Define the action you want buyers to take
- Be crystal clear on what action you want them to take on the page.
- Do you want them to make a purchase, sign up for something, request a demo, make a download, etc?
- Do you have targeted landing pages? These can be existing pages and/or pages created specifically for your ad campaigns
Only after all of this are you ready for keyword research because you’ll be able to target the highest-intent search queries that match these insights.
The last step, create high-converting assets: for those in the back, I’ll say it again, “Use targeted & optimized landing pages.” Also, you’ll need compelling ad creatives, and strong CTAs to capture the demand effectively.
Why Does this Work Better?
☑ Your ad spend goes towards what’s truly important for the business
☑ Your messaging aligns with what customers actually want
☑ You highlight what makes your product the best choice
☑ You use data to validate and refine your strategy – this isn’t a set it and forget it
